VG-P Series: Biomass Pellet-Fired BurnersThe Irish Government will be offering financial support, via the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), to businesses to produce renewable heat from biomass in 2017. In order to capitalise on this incentive many companies will be installing boilers from countries where burning biomass in large boilers for heat has been established for many years.
The one issue that many of these businesses may fail to consider is that the supply chain that provides the feedstock to run these boilers is not set up to dry biomass down to the levels that some of these boilers need. We had the vision to see this happening and along with partners in Denmark and the USA began to design pellet-fired boilers with the intention of replacing chip-fired versions. In the time it took us to achieve this the wholesale price of pellets has dropped. At the same time companies in Europe have built and tested small-scale pellet-mills, which makes it possible for individuals and small companies to produce their own feedstock. Pellets have a higher energy density than chip and a lower moisture content. This leads to a more efficient heating system. See the VG-P Series. |
